Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) This is the 12th annual national event. Dates for the next count run through Presidents Day weekend Friday February 13 -16, 2009.
The GBBC is a joint project between the Cornell Lab of Ornothology and the Audubon Society and is held annually. The village of Warm Springs, Georgia is proud to participate in this project and we have initiated a festival inviting everyone to come to Warm Springs and count birds. (see results below)
Destinations for the GBBC include:
- The National Fish Hatchery is one of the many regional hatcheries in the southeast and is fed by the Cold Springs that flow from Pine Mountain. This location provides a walking trail around the numerous ponds that provide migrating birds with a plentiful source of water and food.
- FD Roosevelt State Park The largest of Georgia's State Parks and recently declared an Important Bird Area, this park featuers over 37 miles of Hiking and Backpacking along the Pine Mountain Trail.
Visiting the village of
Warm Springs, Georgia is like taking a step back in time where bird watchers can shop, eat and rest in the town made famous by Franklin D. Roosevelt. As this is a new event, we are not accepting vendors. We want to make sure this is an established feature so that everyone will benefit.
Ecotourism is not a new feature in Warm Springs, Georgia and we are proud to promote enviromentally conscience events and sustainable travel such as the Great Backyard Bird Count at Roosevelt's Little White House and FD Roosevelt State Park, that are run but the Georgia Dept of Natural Resources. The National Fish Hatchery is run by the US FIsh and Wildlife Services.
